UTD leaders and members expose legal trickery
June 29, 2008

200 members attend June 29, 2008 Bargaining Session

Two hundred members showed up for the first session of bargaining scheduled for noon on Sunday, June 29th at the School Board Administration Building. Observers tried to cram into room 559.  In its letter to the District on Friday, UTD requested a room large enough to accommodate at least one hundred people, the District chose to ignore the request.  UTD demanded a larger room, and the crowd was sent to a larger room (still too small) and eventually everyone was moved into the auditorium, where every seat was filled.

President Karen Aronowitz, and Mark Richard General Counsel,  made their position clear…the District is misinterpreting our Contract to avoid declaring fiscal urgency.  They are violating the Contract by not activating the step raises (scheduled to go into effect on July 1) and we are seeking legal remedy.

No substantive decisions were reached yesterday.  A committee of union and management representatives will meet today to begin discussing our cost-saving suggestions.

The next round of bargaining is scheduled for Wednesday, July 2nd from 2 – 6 p.m.
